Tyre replacement and Repair

Driving with safe tyres on the road is very important as this is the only contact that the car has with the road surface. If your tyres are worn down near the legal limit this is likely to significantly increase stopping distance.

Making sure to regularly check both tread depth and tyre pressure is important for keeping safe on the road especially, If you are looking for a reliable tyre fitter in Leighton Buzzard give us a call!

Will my tyres fail the MOT?

There are many different cases in which your car tyres can fail the mot. Checking your tyres before mot is the best way to prevent a mot failure and is a relatively simple check to make. The things to look out for:

Tread Depth

The legal minimum tread depth for a tyre is 1.6mm in a continuous band across the central 75% of the tyre. This can be checked with a tread depth gauge. If your tyre has a lower tread than this then it will fail the mot with a dangerous fault as having tyres low on tread will increase stopping distances, reduce grip and make it dangerous to drive your vehicle

Cuts or buldges

If the tyres have any cuts that go down to the cords either on the sidewall or in the tread or if there are any bulges in the sidewall then these will both fail an mot. Typically bulges can be picked up by either hitting kerbs or potholes damaging the tyre beyond repair.

Exposed cords

If the tyre has any exposed cords on the edges from wear or if any cuts expose the cords then this will also cause the tyres to fail the mot. This is largely caused by either a lack of tread or most of the time by wheel alignment issues which will also need to be resolved when the tyre is replaced.

What tyres are best for my car?

What tyres are best for your car will largely depend on what type of driving you are doing, what vehicle you have and your budget. It will also largely come down to personal preference of tyre.

The first thing to consider is whether you need summer, winter or all-season tyres. Summer tyres are what most cars have fitted all year round as they offer good grip in the hotter summer months and still offer a good amount of grip during the wet weather.

A winter tyre is mainly meant for those cold winter months as it performs much better in wet cold conditions along with the snow.

An all-season tyre could also be another alternative as this offers good performance and grip in both the summer and winter months.

Another thing to consider is what car you drive. If it is a high-performance sports car then it is recommended to put a premium tyre on as these manufacturers develop tyres alongside the vehicle manufacturers to best suit the car. This also comes down to personal preference and depends on which tyre you want to run on the vehicle.

The other factor to consider is budget. Instead of premium tyres, there are also either mid-range or budget tyres. These are designed to be more affordable but can still sometimes last similar mileage to a premium tyre but won't offer as good a wet grip or fuel economy. We can supply a large range of tyres to suit all needs and are happy to quote for tyre installation.

Why are my tyres worn more on the inside or outside edge?

Tyres that have worn unevenly on the edges are one of the most common reasons for tyre replacement. One of the reasons why this can happen is due to underinflation of the tyres. If the tyre doesn't have enough air in then this will create extra pressure on the edge of the tyre causing this section to wear out faster.

Another common issue that causes tyres to wear quicker on the edges is incorrect wheel alignment. This can either be caused by a toe or camber issue. These tracking issues could be caused by those pesky potholes or by another suspension issue.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my tyre can be repaired?

A puncture can only be repaired if it is located within the central 75% of the tyre so any punctures on the edge of the tread or on the sidewall are unrepairable. If the tyre has been run flat then this also makes it unrepairable. This is because it will cause sidewall damage and can also cause the rubber to fall apart inside the tyre.

What brands of tyres do you sell?

We offer a large range of tyres to suit everybody's individual needs. We offer many different types of tyres anywhere from budget tyres to premium tyres. We offer many well-known brands such as Continental, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Michelin, Avon and many more! Call today for a free no-obligation quote. We can replace all modern car tyres including run-flat tyres.

How much does it cost to replace tyres?

The cost of replacing tyres largely depends on whether you pick budget or premium tyres. It also depends on the size of your wheels as typically the tyres for larger wheels are more costly. Roughly a budget will cost anywhere from £50-80 a mid-range option anywhere from £80-135, and a premium tyre anywhere from £135-200+. This does depend on size as in some sizes mid-range and premium tyres are a very similar cost.

Do I need to run winter tyres?

This will depend on where and when you will need to use your car. Winter tyres work a lot better during the colder months of the year and provide additional grip during periods with a lot of ice and snow. If you travel abroad using your car then most of Europe legally requires a full set of winter tyres when the temperatures drop between 1st November and 31st March.

What is the difference between budget and premium tyres?

The main difference is that a premium tyre will have a lot more performance benefits than a budget tyre. They also can run for more mileage than most budget tyres. Most of the time premium tyres offer much better wet grip and also typically offer more fuel economy due to the research and development done on these tyres. This can help offer a lot more grip than your average budget tyre.

How do I know what tyre size my car has?

The tyre size is located on the sidewall of the tyres fitted to your vehicle. An example tyre size would be 195-50-16-82V. Certain vehicles such as BMW tend to run a staggered wheel setup which means that the front and back wheels will be a different size.
