Exhaust Fitting

What does your exhaust system do?

exhaust-replacement2.jpg

The exhaust system has many different functions within the car. The first and most important is it controls the amount of noise coming out of the engine. Without the whole exhaust system especially including the silencer, there would be a lot of noise coming out of the engine creating a loud sound at all times.

The second thing that the exhaust system does is carry away all of the harmful gases from the cabin of the vehicle. If the exhaust didn't do this, then the exhaust gases would get into the cabin of the car.

The other thing that the exhaust system does is convert harmful exhaust emissions into things less harmful to the environment. This is the main job that the catalytic converter carries out. It converts carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide, converts hydrocarbons which is unburnt fuel into water vapour and converts nitrogen oxides into nitrogen. This is done through the precious metals found in the cat. Most diesel typically have a DPF to catch all the soot coming out of the engine and save this from going into the environment, but can also incorporate a cat within this system.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to fit a new exhaust?

Typically an exhaust change only takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour but this can vary largely depending on rusty bolts. If the full exhaust system needs to be replaced and all the bolts are very rusty then this could make the job take hours just due to the difficulty of getting everything off.

How much does it cost to fit an exhaust?

The costs can change depending on what needs to be changed, and what vehicle this is on. Some OE catalytic converters can be over £1000, so this depends on what needs to be replaced. Call us today for a free quote on all exhaust repairs.

Do you fit exhausts?

Yes we can fit both aftermarket and OE-quality exhausts on all modern cars, including catalytic converters, silencers, exhaust manifolds etc. We can also carry out repairs when o2 sensors have failed or various other exhaust repairs such as DPF repairs and cleaning.

When does an exhaust need replacing?

An exhaust needs replacing usually because it has corroded and either has a leak from somewhere or has broken off. This just happens because of the age of the exhaust typically as it corrodes over time

Can an exhaust be repaired?

Sometimes repairs can be carried out on exhausts. The most common issue we see is exhaust hangers corroding and breaking off and they can just be cleaned up and carefully welded back on

Why is my car exhaust making a noise?

Car exhausts make a noise when they leak them typically this is the most common cause. It can also end up with rattles if the heatshield falls. Sometimes the catalytic convertor can also melt inside causing a rattly noise.
